Viable Wagonload Production Schemes (ViWaS)

ViWaS stands for "Viable Wagonload Production Schemes". The aim of the international project is to develop solutions for increasing the competitiveness of wagonload freight traffic.

Wagonload traffic is a substantial component of the European logistics in industry branches like steel, chemicals or automotive. The changing circumstances, however, caused a considerable loss of its market shares, which has lead up to a complete abandonment of wagonload traffic in some European countries. The partners involved in the project assume that the following measures have crucial effects on the commercial success:

  • Perpetuation of the current volume of wagonload traffic in order not to undercut the profitability limit
  • Cost reduction in order to restore the contestability
  • Only extensive and balanced measures have the potential to bring wagonload traffic reliably in line with the market requirements

The ViWaS pursues an approach which is meant to follow these requirements. The objective is to develop:

  • Market-oriented business models and operational concepts to ensure the critical mass needed for wagonload traffic
  • New offers for the last mile transport to increase cost efficiency
  • Specifically adjusted solutions for management and IT to ensure reliability and to increase attractiveness and cost efficiency of transports

Special pilot projects demonstrate the suitability of such solutions and their effects. In this way, important knowledge is acquired in order to enable a Europe-wide implementation of the developed strategies.
