Functional Structuring of Freight Transport Networks

The German Guidelines for Integrated Network Design (German: RIN) facilitate the analysis and evaluation of existing transport networks and the development of network concepts for the future. In the course of this project, every network element of a transport route is assigned a category, based on the importance of the connection links crossing the element, and on the route environment. The RIN procedure, used for evaluating connection related supply quality of transport networks, builds upon this categorisation and enables a comparative assessment of networks of one or more transport modes using a level-of-service concept.

The development of the functional structuring concept was started in 2008 in the field of road passenger and freight transport. In contrast, the evaluation of the connection related supply quality and the target values for travel speed on the network sections are limited solely to passenger transport. In this project, the RIN guidelines are created for the logistics function, illustrated on three model regions in Germany.
