The Chair of Railway Tracks and Operations will obtain a new leadership: On September 16th, 2019 Mrs. Dr.-Ing. Birgit Milius will start her duty as new professor at the TU Berlin – in time for the start of the upcoming winter term 2019/2020.
After graduating in civil engineering at Braunschweig University of Technology, Birgit Milius has worked at the institute of railway systems engineering and traffic safety , led by Prof. Pachl, for 17 years – first as a research associate, later as an academic councillor. Her 2009 doctoral thesis bears the title “Construction of a semi-qualitative risk graph for railway systems”.
In her research and teaching activities she has focused on the topics human factors in railways and operational security in addition to the domains of risk and safety. During the past two years Birgit Milius has been working as project manager at Siemens Mobility GmbH . She has been responsible for coordinating and managing externally funded projects with a focus on those within the Shift2Rail research programme.
Mrs. Birgit Milius becoming the new head of department will be accompanied by renaming the department, changing its denomination to Railway Operations and Infrastructure. This is meant to communicate the department’s aspiration to cover the entirety of operational aspects and topics, which includes the aspects of safety technology as well as questions concerning regulations and operations. Furthermore, the development of the topic human factors in railways and the analysis of operational risk and safety aspects will play important roles.
The Railway Operations and Experimentations Centre (EBuEf) is of major importance to the department’s plans for the future. It will be refurbished and will be used for educational and training purposes whilst at the same time being increasingly incorporated into research activities.
Birgit Milius follows Prof. Siegmann who retired in 2017. The vacancy of almost two years is due to reorganisation planning which resulted from the appointment process.
